We both grew up never entering a shoe store, because our grandfather owned Consolidated National Shoe Company which manufactured women's and girl's shoes. These were sold under the names American Girl Shoes, American Juniors, and Cotillions. Whether going to the headquarters or having shoes brought home, we always had our choice of shoes in multiple colors without having to shop in a shoe store. This sometimes led to leaving the house with two different color shoes.The first time we shopped in a store for shoes was as teenagers.
