Mapping Haverhill

This section maps Historic New England’s two historic shoe factory buildings on Essex Street through the ages.

A multicolored map shows three long, parallel factory buildings at the lower left. The Little River comes from the top right and passes behind the three buildings, weaving through a range of other historic brick buildings.
This 1954 Sanborn Fire insurance map of Haverhill shows the triangle between Essex Street, Winter Street, and Locke Street. Historic New England’s two historic shoe factories are at the bottom left. The different colors of the map show the different building materials of the buildings: pink is brick, yellow is wood, and brown (like the factories) is concrete.

This railroad map of New England dates back to 1843. The many objects, archives, and ephemera in Shoe Stories were made, used, and sold all across New England.
